Global land grab and the Balkans: Continuity and changes in a unique historical context
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2018) Mandacı, Nazif; Tutan, Mehmet Ufuk
Current developments concerning land grabs in the Balkans suggest that the region is re-experiencing in the post-socialist era what happened in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries due to the decline of the Ottoman land tenure system, under identical conditions involving fundamental socio-political transformations and integration with global capitalism. These changes are emblematic of a transfer of common to individual ownership. Nowadays, small landholders in some parts of the regionmainly the former labourers on socialist agricultural cooperativesare influenced by the accelerating trend of (re)concentrating landownership, which in some cases takes the form of land grabbing similar to that seen in Africa. This study examines the historical continuity between the Ottoman rule over fledgling nation-states and the post-socialist era by referring to widely discussed socio-economic and political developments regarding contemporary land grab processes.

Exploring the criteria for a green and smart hotel: Insights from hotel managers' perspectives
(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2024) Akel, Gökhan; Noyan, Elçin
PurposeThis study aimed to explore the adaptations and perspectives of hotel managers regarding green and smart hotel technologies within the context of sustainability.Design/methodology/approachA comprehensive literature review guided the formulation of this study, followed by face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with hotel managers. A total of 17 prepared questions were finalized after examination by two expert academicians. The responses were analyzed using qualitative research methodology and the results were weighted using the step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) method.FindingsInterviews with sustainability and operational managers yielded insights into environmentally friendly practices and strategies such as reducing energy and water consumption, waste and chemical reduction, supporting local entrepreneurs and adopting smart technologies. These factors are crucial in eco-friendly hotels. According to the SWARA analysis, 'reducing energy consumption' is the most effective criterion.Research limitations/implicationsThis study offers insights into green and smart hotel management by focusing on the perspectives of hotel managers with a small sample. In future studies, research with larger samples on customer perspectives and the effect of hotel selection is recommended.Practical implicationsThis study offers insights to hotel managers on energy conservation and customer satisfaction enhancement through green and technological applications. These technological applications can improve hotel service quality and provide personalized experiences, fostering customer loyalty.Originality/valueThis pioneering study focuses on the intersection of green and smart practices in hospitality. By intertwining the often separately discussed concepts of green and smart, this study presents a novel approach to the sustainability practices in the hospitality industry, holding a key position, especially in Turkey. Implementing these concepts can yield environmental and economic benefits, offering invaluable insights to hotel managers and policymakers into integrating smart technologies with sustainability.

Gamification in mobile shopping applications: A review in terms of technology acceptance model
(SPRINGER, 2023) Bayır, Talha; Akel, Gökhan
Businesses add gamification to their mobile shopping applications to increase customer interaction and their continuance intention. It has been observed that, with gamification based mobile shopping activities, consumers have positive experiences, and their customer loyalty has increased. Therefore, it is crucial to research the effects of gamification content used in mobile shopping applications on consumers' tendencies to use or not use technology. This research aims to determine the effect of gamification activities offered in mobile shopping applications on users' perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, and intention using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The research used a convenience sample of 442 mobile shopping applications users living in Turkey and an online survey method was used to collect the research data. Considering the analyses of the research, the relationship levels between the variables were determined. There are significant relationships between PEOU and GAM (r = .939), PU and PEOU (r = .874), ATT and PU (r = .827), INT and ATT (r = .969). Reliability and validity analyses were applied. The factor loadings of the scales, and AVE value above .50, Cronbach's Alpha (C alpha), and CR value above .70 were considered statistically reliable and valid. The technique of structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to estimate the variables' effect and mediation levels. Then, it was found that perceived ease of use had a positive and significant mediating effect (beta = .339) between gamification and attitude variables. Similarly, perceived usefulness had a positive and significant (beta = .827) mediating effect between gamification and attitude variables.

Hedonic and utilitarian benefits as determinants of the application continuance intention in location-based applications: the mediating role of satisfaction
(SPRINGER, 2021) Akel, Gökhan; Armağan, Ece
The increase in the number of social media users and smartphone usage has a positive relationship with the diversity of applications. People use mobile applications that provide location-based service either directly or indirectly to share location with their smartphones. With the increase in the use of applications that determine location information by determining location information on mobile devices, mobile applications have become an important research area for user behavior. These applications are also utilized by users for communication and socialization purposes. The literature has usually focused on popular social media applications and studies on location-based applications (LBAs) have been insufficient. In this study, we investigate the impact of location-based services, such as Swarm and Foursquare. This study uses the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the expectation confirmation model (ECM) to understand why users continue using mobile applications. This article examines the role of hedonic comprised of application aesthetics and perceived enjoyment and utilitarian benefits (comprised of application quality and application utility) for consumer behavior in the development of application markets on satisfaction and application continuance intention. Besides, we show the benefits of the strongest effect on application users. By using the mediation satisfaction effect between hedonic and utilitarian benefits; we test the application continuance intention with regression analyses and the Sobel test. We surveyed young subjects as our sapling frame who regularly use mobile applications. We collected data from 400 users by convenience sampling method to test our hypotheses. Given our findings, we show that utilitarian and hedonic benefits are positively related to the application continuance intention. Besides, we show that satisfaction significantly mediates the relationship between hedonic/utilitarian benefits and application continuance intention. Since the main purpose of the application developers is using the application per se in the long term, they need to focus chiefly on user satisfaction. We also show that determining the relevant factors that affect application continuance intention positively is important for the businesses in a competitive environment.
